Designing for the Great Outdoors

OBJECTIVE â€‹

Designing for the outdoor market, targeting tailgating at Auburn University. Creating a product that improves the experience, seamlessly integrates functionality, durability, and aesthetics to advance the experience.

INSPIRATION

The idea came from an experience I had when traveling in Africa with my family. One night we had drinks in the middle of the Serengeti and they had brought out a massive bar cart for us to enjoy as we watched the sun set.

MOOD BOARD

Leather Goods

Well crafted leather to uphold regular use and the elements.

Tool Box

Organized and secured interior, with ability to be taken on the go.

Luggage

Hold large amount of items and protects contents. It also is very  portable.

MARKET REASEARCH

I researched tailgating and camping bar cart options but found the market lacked a option that was able to be portable, easy to set up, secured all parts, while creating a classy display.

On average students consume over 3 drinks while tailgating for a college football game.

EARLY IDEATION

200 Sketches

During the sketching processes I looked at all different shapes and sizes. While function was a top priority, I wanted a elevated look to heighten the experience and to create a product that was also meant to be showcased and displayed by the user.

PROTOTYPING

The first prototype made out of foam core started with only space for one bottle. This lacked balance in the design and would leave the customer with less beverage options.

In the second development created from wood, a second bottle slot was added for more diversity. Two shelves were installed for room for additional cocktail components. A drawer was also tested in this design.

WORKING PROCESS

The progress and evolution of the design continued through iterations using both physical and Solidworks models.

Crafting Prototypes allowed for precisely testing the products usability, sizing, and functionality.
